Information
Groot FM 90.5 is an Afrikaans community radio station based in Pretoria. Founded in 2013, it serves Afrikaans-speaking audiences across Gauteng with a blend of local news, community programming and a Pop and Top 40 music format. Alongside current chart hits, the station regularly features Afrikaans artists, giving its playlist a stronger local identity than many larger commercial broadcasters.
The station's flagship programme is Die GROOT Ontbyt with Pierre Breytenbach and Jennifer Myburgh. Broadcast on both radio and kykNET, the show combines news, traffic reports, interviews and entertainment. Pierre's background as an actor and comedian is noticeable in the presentation style, which feels conversational rather than heavily scripted. During listening sessions, the programme moved quickly between serious topics and lighter moments without losing its pace.
The daytime schedule leans more heavily on music and lifestyle content. Mid-Oggend met Sarina and Weeksdae Vibes met Venita target listeners at work or at home, while Route326 with Francois van Rensburg and Anelma van Heerden focuses on the busy commute between Pretoria and Johannesburg. Their on-air chemistry and fast-paced delivery help keep the show engaging during peak traffic hours.
Unlike national stations that aim for the broadest possible audience, Groot FM 90.5 remains closely tied to Pretoria and surrounding communities. Local events, schools, charities and community projects are regular topics of discussion. Jacques "Doepie" du Preez is particularly associated with this community-focused approach and is well known among listeners for his involvement in local initiatives.
After listening for several hours, the station felt most relevant for Afrikaans-speaking residents of Pretoria, newcomers looking to understand the local community and businesses wanting to reach a regional audience. Its strongest asset is not the music alone, but its connection to the people and places it serves.
