Pretoria FM

Pretoria FM is an Afrikaans community radio station based in Pretoria, Gauteng, broadcasting on 104.2 FM across the greater Pretoria area. Its community broadcast services also cover parts of the wider region. National and international access comes through DStv Audio Channel 887, online streaming and the Pretoria FM smartphone app. The station first went on air as Radio Pretoria on 18 September 1993 and serves an Afrikaans community of interest.

The schedule is broader than a music format. Nuusweek met Susan en Leon covers news and current affairs, while Landbou met Mia gives agriculture a regular place in the schedule. Impak met Esté Gross focuses on current affairs, and Vanaand met Pienaar Lochner runs from 18:00 to 22:00. James Kemp, the station manager, is also involved in news and analysis. In March 2026, journalist Mia Slabbert joined the station's agricultural programming, adding experience from print, radio and television.

Pretoria FM has also changed how its content is delivered. Nuusweek, originally launched as a weekly e-publication in 2025, moved into the radio schedule from January 2026. In May, the station introduced the Raakpraat discussion programme on YouTube. James Kemp explained the reason simply: “A radio station has long since ceased to exist only on an FM frequency.” The programme is published weekly and gives longer discussions room than a standard radio segment.

The station's updated app also carries Nuusweek editions, while streaming and YouTube extend the service beyond the FM signal. This is a more significant change than simply adding another way to listen: Pretoria FM is now using the same news and current-affairs material across radio, digital publishing and video.

Music remains part of the service, with recent playlist records including Elizma Theron, Riana Nel, Bok van Blerk and Lianie May alongside international artists such as Taylor Swift and Billy Joel. It is not a tightly controlled Top 40 rotation.

Current official daily or weekly audience figures for 2024–2026 are not published in Pretoria FM's open sources. Using the old 2015 RAMS figure would therefore give a misleading picture of its present audience.

RSG occupies a different position as an SABC public-service Afrikaans station with a national mandate. Pretoria FM is a community broadcaster serving a defined community of interest, with its FM footprint centred on the greater Pretoria/Tshwane area. Its wider reach comes through digital and DStv distribution rather than a nationwide FM network.

What stands out in Pretoria FM's current output is the amount of specialist content attached to the station itself. News, agriculture, current affairs and Afrikaans cultural coverage are not side features around a music service; they are recurring parts of the schedule. That gives the station a clearer editorial identity than a playlist-only community station.
