Information
Ligwalagwala FM has been part of everyday life in Mpumalanga since 1982 and remains one of the most recognizable SiSwati-language stations within the SABC network. Broadcasting from Mbombela, the station mainly covers Mpumalanga and parts of Gauteng through frequencies within the 87.7 - 104.0 FM range. According to the latest 2026 BRC data, Ligwalagwala FM reaches around 1.1 million weekly listeners, showing that it still holds a strong position among regional public broadcasters (the report data were published on the official website; you can review them here).
After spending a few evenings listening through the SABC+ stream, what stood out to me most was how different the station feels compared to larger Johannesburg commercial radio brands. The presenters sound relaxed and community-focused instead of overly polished or performance-driven. Even during music-heavy segments, there’s a strong sense that the station is speaking directly to local listeners rather than chasing national trends.
The morning lineup, especially Kusile Mzansi Breakfast Show with Dumi “Madumane” Simelane, sets the tone well. His style feels natural and conversational, mixing humor, local news, and listener call-ins without sounding forced. The Masakhane segment is probably the clearest example of the station’s public-service role because it regularly deals with real community concerns instead of generic radio topics.
Later in the day, Asambe Afternoon Drive with Fortune Ntekati shifts into a more urban sound, but the station still keeps its Swati identity through language, local references, and music choices. You hear a mix of gospel, Afro-pop, contemporary local music, and traditional influences depending on the time of day.
What makes Ligwalagwala FM work is that it doesn’t try too hard to sound modern. It still feels local, familiar, and closely connected to the people listening to it - which is probably why so many listeners continue staying loyal to the station decades after it first launched.
