Good Hope FM is Cape Town’s oldest commercial music station, broadcasting on 94.0 FM since 1965. Owned by the SABC, it targets a young urban audience and combines Contemporary Hit, Hip Hop, and R&B formats with a strong connection to Cape Town culture.

Unlike many commercial stations that rely heavily on international playlists, Good Hope FM balances global hits with local stories, entertainment news, and community-focused content. That local identity is one of the reasons the station has remained relevant for decades.

The station’s flagship program, The Roger Goode Breakfast Show, delivers a mix of chart music, traffic updates, competitions, prank calls, and Roger Goode’s trademark humour. As one of South Africa’s most recognizable radio personalities, Roger brings an energy that sets the tone for the rest of the day. The Lunch Club with Carissa Cupido and Chad Saaiman offers a more relaxed midday atmosphere, blending lifestyle discussions, pop culture, and music, while The Great Drive keeps commuters entertained with news, listener interaction, and a fast-moving playlist.

Weekend programming is highlighted by Doctor’s in the House, hosted by Dr Jules, arguably the station’s most accomplished club DJ. Known for live mashups, turntable skills, and more than two decades in the industry, he has shared stages with artists including Black Coffee, Mi Casa, and Goldfish. His mixes help transform the station from a daytime broadcaster into a soundtrack for Cape Town’s nightlife.

After spending several hours listening through the online stream, what impressed me most was how natural the presenters sounded. During one afternoon show, a discussion about a local event flowed seamlessly into listener calls and music without feeling scripted. Combined with a playlist that moves comfortably between current hits, R&B, and hip-hop, Good Hope FM feels less like a corporate radio station and more like a genuine reflection of Cape Town’s personality.
