Information

IKwekwezi FM is one of the more interesting stations within South Africa’s SABC radio network because it successfully combines modern township music culture with the preservation of the Ndebele language. Founded on 1 April 1983 and broadcasting mainly in Ndebele, the station follows a Talk, Sports and Entertainment format while targeting listeners across Limpopo and Gauteng through FM frequencies between 90.6 and 107.7 FM.

What makes IKwekwezi FM stand out is that it does not sound like a typical public broadcaster. Many SABC stations still follow a more formal presentation style, but IKwekwezi FM feels far more relaxed and connected to everyday township culture. Presenters like Biziwe and Hleziphi move naturally between community discussions, entertainment topics, and listener interaction without making the station feel overly scripted.

After listening to several evening broadcasts recently, especially DJ MPUMI’s Friday night show, I noticed how different the station’s music policy feels compared to larger commercial stations in Johannesburg. Instead of relying only on overplayed mainstream Amapiano hits, the mixes included deeper Pretoria township sounds, local Bacardi-style rhythms, and lesser-known producers who rarely receive airtime on stations like Metro FM. That gives IKwekwezi FM a more authentic local identity instead of sounding like a generic urban playlist.

Another thing that stood out during late-night programming was how openly callers discussed relationships, nightlife, financial pressure, and everyday social issues. The conversations felt much less controlled than on heavily commercial stations, which probably explains why the station still maintains such a loyal audience among younger listeners.

For a relatively small language station, IKwekwezi FM plays a surprisingly important cultural role inside modern South African radio because it proves that regional language broadcasting can still feel contemporary, energetic, and relevant to younger generations.
