Information
YFM broadcasts on 99.2 FM in Gauteng and remains one of South Africa’s most influential youth radio stations. Its format combines Kwaito, Hip Hop, R&B, Urban Contemporary, and Amapiano, making it a key destination for listeners who want a stronger local music focus than most commercial radio offers.
Unlike stations such as 947 or Jacaranda FM, which lean heavily toward international pop, YFM has built its identity around South African urban culture. The station played an important role in exposing artists such as ProKid, AKA, and Cassper Nyovest to wider audiences, and that commitment to local music is still noticeable today.
The programming reflects the same approach. The Way Up with Nia Brown and Okay Wasabi stands out because it feels spontaneous rather than tightly scripted. During a recent morning stream, the hosts moved effortlessly from a discussion about trending social-media stories to playful debates and local humour, creating the impression of friends talking rather than presenters reading a rundown. Home Run with Ayanda MVP & Sinaye is arguably the station's strongest show, balancing interviews, listener interaction, and music without losing momentum.
What impressed me most was the music rotation. On many commercial stations, local tracks often feel like an obligation between international hits. On YFM, South African music drives the sound of the station. During several listening sessions, it was common to hear amapiano, local hip-hop, and urban releases featured more prominently than overseas chart records.
I also found the online stream reliable and easy to access, with stable audio quality throughout extended listening sessions. Overall, YFM feels less like a traditional radio station and more like a reflection of contemporary urban life in Johannesburg. That connection to local culture is what continues to separate it from many of its competitors.
