Information
Gagasi 99.5 FM has grown into one of the most recognizable regional stations in South Africa since its launch on March 13, 2006, in Durban. After spending a few days actually listening to it - especially during the morning slot - you start to understand why it holds that position. The whole “Urban Zulu” idea isn’t just branding; it’s something you hear constantly in the way presenters switch between English and isiZulu without it feeling forced. According to the latest BRC data, the station reaches around 1.6 million weekly listeners (the full audience report is available here), and that number makes sense once you experience how naturally the station connects with its audience.
The format sits within Adult Contemporary, but in practice it feels more flexible. You’ll hear Amapiano, Gqom, and mainstream urban tracks, but they’re blended in a way that doesn’t feel chaotic. Compared to something like Ukhozi FM, which leans more traditional in tone, Gagasi feels more urban and youth-driven, even when discussing serious topics. Technically, stations in this region broadcast within the 87.6–107.4 FM range, covering KwaZulu-Natal and nearby provinces, which explains its strong regional reach.
Felix Hlophe is a big part of the station’s identity. Listening to his morning show, you notice how easily he shifts from humor to real social issues-it doesn’t feel scripted, more like a conversation you’d overhear in real life. In the afternoon, DJ Sphectacula and DJ Naves bring a tighter, more music-focused energy, while Selbeyonce adds a more direct, sometimes provocative tone that keeps things interesting.
What stands out overall is balance. The station doesn’t try too hard to be trendy, but it also doesn’t feel outdated. It sits somewhere in the middle - and that’s probably exactly why people keep tuning in.
