Jacaranda FM

Jacaranda FM has been on air since 1986 and, after actually spending time with it across different dayparts, it’s clear why it still holds a strong position in South Africa’s radio landscape. Broadcasting in English and Afrikaans, the station follows an Adult Contemporary format, but in reality it’s more nuanced than that label suggests. The mix of 80s and 90s tracks with current hits is handled carefully enough that it never feels random. Its FM coverage runs within the 93.9–97.1 FM range, mainly across Limpopo and Mpumalanga, which explains its strong presence in the northern part of the country.

The morning show with Martin Bester is where the station’s identity really comes through. After a few listens, you start noticing how structured it is - his background in music clearly influences the pacing, and the transitions between talk and music feel deliberate rather than improvised. It’s polished, but not in a way that feels artificial. Alex Jay’s daytime slot is the opposite in tone - more relaxed, predictable, and easy to leave on while working, which is probably exactly the point.

What gives the station more weight, though, is Good Morning Angels. It’s easy to mention it as a feature, but if you follow it over time, you see actual impact - fundraisers for medical treatment, support for families, practical help that goes beyond radio. That’s the kind of thing that builds long-term trust, not just ratings.

The rest of the lineup holds up well. Rob Forbes and Rozanne McKenzie keep the Drive show light but engaging, while Danny Painter and Thabiso Khambule add more credibility on the music side, especially when it comes to local releases. Compared to something like 947, Jacaranda FM feels more controlled and less trend-driven. It doesn’t try to reinvent itself every season - and that consistency is probably its biggest advantage.
