Information

Jozi FM 105.8 operates as a strict Community News, Talk, and Business broadcaster. Launched in 1995 as Soweto Community Radio, it has grown into the largest community station across Soweto and Johannesburg. The grid uses a balanced 50/50 split between music and talk, completely rejecting corporate templates. Instead of sticking to one language, presenters switch fluidly between Zulu, Sesotho, Setswana, Sepedi, Tsonga, and English, matching the exact multilingual slang heard on local streets.

The schedule directly addresses township needs. Weekday mornings rely on Lungile Masondo’s flagship Big Breakfast Show for regional news, transport updates, and sharp humor. Mid-days switch to Penny Ntuli’s Mid-Morning Chat, focusing on lifestyle, relationships, and interactive call-ins. In the evening, Refiloe Motsei anchors the rush-hour drive on The Afternoon Fix. Nights feature Jozi FM Talk, a raw forum for community debates with local activists. Sundays turn entirely to gospel and spiritual programming. On weekends, the station shifts to pure music. Saturday features the youth-focused Trending Saturday, while Friday and Saturday nights host Club Explosion, where DJ Cya and DJ Solly Vista spin uninterrupted Amapiano and house sets. DJ Robby D also brings specific regional flavor during the Limpopo Connection slot.

I spent four hours listening straight to Jozi FM on a weekday afternoon, and the raw experience is a mixed bag. I really appreciated the genuine local connection; hearing the hosts drop the robotic studio persona to joke with callers while switching from Zulu to English mid-sentence feels highly versatile. The music choices are great, but the actual mixing is rough—the station abruptly cuts from a classic 80s soul ballad right into a heavy Amapiano track with zero transition. While the endless stream of hyper-local business shout-outs and neighborhood notices got a bit exhausting to listen to for hours, it definitely proved to me that this station functions as a vital, living notice board for Soweto.
